Bar of Soup

News this week

bar of soup, hong kongI first stopped by this little snack bar about six months ago and I'd been meaning to get back ever since. I finally made it the other evening. It's a narrow place on Staunton street. There are some small tables along the side and a couple of slightly larger tables at the very back. There are more tables upstairs but I didn't go up to look - I took a small table opposite the counter.

As you may have guessed their speciality is soup. It is served in large white bowl-shaped mugs .... or was that mug-shaped bowls. Either way they are perfect for the job.

At any given time there are six varieties of soup available and these six change from week to week so that altogether there are twenty-four changing over a four week cycle. This week was week three and, after much deliberation I decided on multi-grain chicken soup. (And I'm going to have to go back next week to try the chunky carrot and lentil.)... (continued)

Davis Wine and Tapas

Typhoon Kammuri threw cold water all over my plans for dinner last Wednesday but the day was salvaged. Quite pleasantly too. Like many people, after a day of forced idleness, I was bored silly.

I'd figured that since no markets had been open all day menus might not be at full strength so I sauntered off to Kennedy Town where I'd heard about a handful of bars.

Davis was on the end of a line of four. It has a nice rustic feel, wooden stools and simulated stone topped tables. They also had a blackboard menu right in the doorway, I needed no other invitation.

There were a few other people there but there was plenty of space. The waitress went off to find another blackboard and lugged it over to the table and explained the dishes. For tapas the dishes are actually quite large, and if you are only looking for a light snack I'd recommend sharing.

For a starter I ordered deep fried camembert with assorted sausages ($78). There were actually three types of sausage in a tomato and pepper sauce. With the cheese and some slices of toast as well I decided that this was two tapas rolled into one. They both went down very well with a cold bottle of Beerlao ... (continued)

Farfalle

farfalle restaurant hong kongI found a neat little pasta place the other day. I'd taken a stroll along Gough Street to see what was new. and I almost missed the place. It doesn't look like much from the outside just a doorway and a fairly blank looking wall. Although I must confess, after I left I noticed that they had painted their name on it.

Anyway the idea of pasta appealed to me, especially home made pasta so I stepped inside. It is surprisingly spacious with a young laid back atmosphere. The decor is simple but trendy with some sofas around the far side of the bar.

I settled for a table with a commanding view of the restaurant. The bread basket was produced, I ordered a glass of house white, a Chardonnay, and perused the menu.

Pasta makes up the main part of the menu, it is all home made and offered in classic dishes such as spaghetti Bolognese as well as more inventive variations of their own creation.

There are rice dishes for those that prefer. The goose liver risotto and the wild mushroom risotto were both very tempting. but I had pasta on my mind and pasta it was going to be... (continued)
